As a matter of fact, it demonstrates the ultimate exercise of freedom in the U.S., the freedom to make very unpopular choices. Now, we don't have to underwrite such choices and could yank their tax exempt status as a church (see what happened to Bob Jones University years ago when it tried to ban interracial dating amongst students), but the vote was legal.
